Liberty Memorial Senior Photos in Kansas City | Catalina

The Liberty Memorial is one of those Kansas City locations that does a lot of the work for you. The 217-foot limestone tower, the grand staircases, the sweeping views of Union Station and downtown, the open terraces that catch every bit of available evening light. For a senior session, it is hard to beat. Catalina knew that, and she was right.

Catalina came into her session wanting something confident and polished, with enough room for her personality to come through. She brought both, and the location matched her energy exactly. These are some of my favorite Liberty Memorial senior photos Kansas City has produced from my studio.

Why the Liberty Memorial Works for Senior Portraits

The National WWI Museum and Memorial was dedicated in 1926 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 2006. The 217-foot tower rises above Penn Valley Park with unobstructed views of the downtown skyline on one side and the open lawn on the other. That combination of architecture, elevation, and open space is genuinely rare in a single location.

For senior portraits specifically, the site offers variety without requiring much travel. The grand staircases provide height and structure. The terraces give you open sky and city backdrop. The stone walls and columns offer tighter, more architectural framing. And the lawn at the base is ideal for portraits as the light drops in the final hour before sunset.

Catalina worked through each of these spaces naturally. She moved between posed and relaxed, formal and spontaneous, and the location held up across every shift. That is what makes this spot worth returning to.

The Session

We started on the staircases with the skyline behind her, letting the last of the afternoon light warm the stone. From there we moved across the terraces and down toward the lawn as golden hour settled in. By the end of the session the light was doing exactly what you want it to do at this location: soft, directional, and warm against the limestone.

Catalina was composed from the first frame. She had a clear sense of how she wanted to be photographed and trusted the process enough to also laugh, move, and let the wind do what it wanted with her hair. Those tend to be the frames that stand out.

The session captured what a good senior portrait session should: a real person, at a real moment, in a setting that reflects both who she is and where she is going.

Planning Your Own Senior Session at the Liberty Memorial

A few practical things worth knowing before you book this location.

Timing matters more here than at most spots. The Memorial faces north, which means the best portrait light comes from the east and west depending on the time of year. Evening sessions in summer and fall tend to produce the warmest, most flattering results. Mid-afternoon sessions in summer can work but require more careful positioning.

Bring at least two outfits. The architectural variety at this location supports different looks. Something structured and polished works well against the stone and columns. A softer, more relaxed outfit pairs well with the open lawn and skyline backdrop. Two outfits give your gallery more range without adding much time to the session.

Book early. Summer and early fall dates fill quickly, especially for photographers who also shoot weddings.
